Tancredo Demands Apology from Mexican Ambassador

Washington (Talon News) -- Calling the behavior of Mexican spectators at an
Olympic qualifying soccer match "indefensible" and "inexcusable," a Colorado
congressman has demanded a formal apology from the Mexican Ambassador to the
United States.

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) called for the apology after Mexican fans drowned
out the "Star Spangled Banner" with boos and cheers and chanted the name of
Usama bin Laden after a 4-0 defeat of Team USA by Team Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, Mexican spectators chanted "Usama,
Usama," at the end of the match.

"I am concerned about the behavior of the Mexican spectators and their
government's non-reaction to it," said Tancredo, a member of the House
International Relations Committee.

"What would happen if any other nation had chanted 'Hitler!' after defeating
an Israeli team?" Tancredo asked. "It's completely indefensible. Athletes
can certainly expect to receive some level of heckling as a natural and
healthy part of international sporting events -- particularly in the context
of soccer matches. But this blatant disrespect for our athletes and our
country far exceeds the limits of what is acceptable in the course of
friendly competition. It is, simply put, inexcusable."

Tancredo, who represents Colorado's Sixth Congressional District, has been
highly critical of the failure of American and Mexican officials to stem the
tide of illegal immigration.
